More Fur Farms Going out of Business

The downward slide in prices of fox pelts in recent years has caused serious hardship for Finnish fur farms. It is estimated that prices would have to go up by at least 20 percent for the sector to be profitable.

About one in every four fur farmers could go out of business in the coming winter.

Next week’s fur auction could prove to be a final straw for many farmers, says Tomas Widblom of Finnish Fur Sales.

Finland currently has 1,200 fur farmers, slightly more than half of whom are in Swedish-speaking Ostrobothnia. The industry claims that it directly and indirectly employs 22,000 people in Finland.
