Heading for the Front Lines

Our flagship, Steve Irwin, is currently in Cannes, France, making final preparations for Operation Blue Rage. On another front, because of the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, we have just announced our plans for a campaign to help with the animal rescue efforts there. This is called our Gulf Rescue Campaign.

Please read on to learn more about these current campaigns as well as environmental protection progress being made in the Galapagos and an update on the Australian Maritime Safety Authority's investigation into the sinking of the Ady Gil this past January.

This is a critical time for Sea Shepherd. Our funds are stretched tight, having two campaigns at once while simultaneously preparing to go back to Antarctica to defend whales, but we know that with your support we can continue to defend, conserve, and protect our oceans.

While British Petroleum (BP) may be morally and legally responsible for causing the deep-sea oil breach in the Gulf of Mexico that is turning into the largest and most destructive oil spill in history, it is impractical and unwise to leave the rescue of all marine life in the Gulf to a private corporation.

We have initiated plans for a Gulf Rescue Campaign and are calling upon all able organizations to join us in sending vessels with trained crew to support large-scale efforts to rescue oiled sea birds, turtles, and other marine species.

Together we have the resources, skills, experience, and passion to make a huge difference in the number of lives and species that can be saved from this disastrous oil spill. Learn more about how you can help and please donate today to support our efforts in the Gulf!

The bluefin tuna fishing season in the Mediterranean started on May 16th with a legal quota is 13,500 tons. We suspect that four times this tonnage will be taken with the illegal three quarters falling into the hands of poachers - that is, without our interventions.

We are not targeting and protesting legal fishing operations, like one of our peer non-profit organizations. We are going after the criminals who fish beyond the legal quota and we intend to shut them down!

The Steve Irwin will be on duty in the Mediterranean addressing the crisis facing the bluefin tuna. Please offer your support to help us save this ancient fish whose population is in steadfast decline. (more)

This month in Puerto Ayora, Sea Shepherd organized a conference titled "Criminal Environmental Law as a Conservation Tool in Galapagos and the Region."

During the conference, the Attorney General of Ecuador announced the designation of the first-ever prosecutor specialized in environmental law for the province of Galapagos.

The Attorney General promoted the signing of the "Declaration of Galapagos," in which the judicial authorities, army, and police agreed to initiatives aimed to strengthen the application of criminal environmental law in protected areas in Galapagos. (more)

The Australian government promised to stand up for the whales. Instead, they have taken a passive-aggressive role in dealing with the defenders of the whales.

We just received the report from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) entitled "Fact finding report into the reported collision involving the New Zealand registered craft Ady Gil and the Japan registered whaling ship Shonan Maru No. 2 in the Southern Ocean on January 6th, 2010."

Sure enough, the conclusion from the AMSA is exactly and sadly what we expected. (more)

Saving marine life is extremely vital to the future of our oceans and for our own species. If fish disappear, so will whales, dolphins, seals, sea birds, and the invertebrates. If that happens, the oceans will die, and if the oceans die, civilization will collapse all around us - meaning humanity will die.

I know this seems like a doomsday "theory," but without a change in the state of our oceans, this will be a not too distant reality. The solution is not to stick our heads in the sand and ignore reality - the solution is to stand up and fight against the demise of our oceans. We will not stand-down; we will not loose faith. Won't you please help us make a difference for the oceans, and in turn - for our own species? Thank-you for your support!
For the oceans,
