Glass Cleaning Chemical Injected Into Burger Meat

If you're in the beef business, what do you do with all the extra cow parts and trimmings that have traditionally been sold off for use in pet food? You scrape them together into a pink mass, inject them with a chemical to kill the e.coli, and sell them to fast food restaurants to make into hamburgers.
That's what's been happening all across the USA with beef sold to McDonald's, Burger King, school lunches and other fast food restaurants, according to a New York Times article. The beef is injected with ammonia, a chemical commonly used in glass cleaning and window cleaning products.
This is all fine with the USDA, which endorses the procedure as a way to make the hamburger beef "safe" enough to eat. Ammonia kills e.coli, you see, and the USDA doesn't seem to be concerned with the fact that people are eating ammonia in their hamburgers.

Sea Shepherd Attacked

In what at first
appears to be a massive blow, Japanese whalers today rammed the Sea Shepherd’s
Adi Gil slicing off the front of the hull and sinking the high tech $1.5million
vessel. They failed to kill the crew of six who were all safely rescued
but they did succeed in drawing attention to their grotesque behaviour
and still have two other anti- waling ships to contend with, both of which
are currently engaging the whalers near Antarctica.
SS Captain Paul Watson told the media "If they think that our remaining
two ships will retreat from the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in the
face of their extremism, they will be mistaken."
"We now have a real whale war on our hands now and we have no intention
of retreating."

2009 – A Year Of Progress Against Vivisection

Vaccine no guarantee against cervical cancer, Ritu Bhatia New Delhi, Women's groups and doctors slammed advertisements issued by two pharmaceutical majors that claimed vaccination against human papilloma virus (HPV) was the best way of preventing cervical cancer. The objection from Sama Resource Centre for Women and Health and Saheli Women's Resource Centre to Glaxo-SmithKline (GSK) India and Merck marketing HPV vaccines as a "protection against cervical cancer" comes a few days after the Central Drugs Standards Control Organisation (CDSCO) also took notice of the advertisements. In a showcause notice issued to GSK India, the CDSCO cited objections raised by experts who said that the advertisements claiming that a vaccine can prevent cervical cancer were inaccurate and misleading. According to doctors, the drug majors appear to have oversimplified the complexity of cervical cancer and this could mislead consumers.
Researchers
also point out that protection from HPV need not always translate into
protection from cancer. "The vaccination doesn't always protect women
from cervical cancer because this virus isn't the only cause of cervical
cancer," said Dr Sidharth Sahni, a surgical oncology consultant at
Artemis Health Institute.
The available HPV vaccines protect against only two types of viruses associated
with cervical cancer. "There are several types of HPVs associated
with cervical cancer, and vaccines have not been proved to be effective
against all of them," said Bhudev Chandra Das, former director of
the Institute of Cytology and Preventive Oncology and now a professor
of biomedical research at Delhi University.
Ideally, the HPV vaccine should be administered to adolescent girls. Over the past year, paediatricians across the country have been urging parents of teenagers to administer them this vaccine. But what many fail to mention is that this should only be given to those who have had no sexual exposure. "We first need to identify the target group for this vaccination," Sahni added. Vani Subramaniam of Saheli said the pharmaceutical companies were hiding information about the side effects of the vaccines. According to Anjali Shenoy of Sama, the health lobby should concentrate more on increasing awareness on screening the cancer rather than its vaccines.

Coventry Greyhound Track Closes

COVENTRY’s
dog racing stadium looks to have run its last race. Following the Boxing
Day meeting at the Brandon-based track, stipendiary steward Irene Haselwood
acquired all identity books for greyhound racing to be held there. Rumours
that the track was in trouble have been circling for several weeks and
those fears were confirmed after Saturday’s meeting when Haselwood
moved in to declare the stadium closed. She said: “Following discussions
with several parties involved in running the stadium, I’ve subsequently
spoken to trainers attached to Coventry and informed them that racing
will cease until further notice.
“It’s regrettable when a track stops racing but wheels are
already firmly in motion in dealing with the trainers and greyhounds affected.”
In April 2004 the stadium welcomed a return of greyhound racing following
a lapse of many years with owner Avtar Sandhu and Malcolm Francis at the
helm but the latter then assumed sole control before ill-health forced
him to retire in 2007. Local businessman and greyhound owner John Flounders
then leased the business although speculation suggests Sandhu remained
a key figure. Greyhound racing has toiled to secure off-track confidence
with numerous problems making it unlikely to be considered for crucial
contract for racing in betting shops.

The Batboat takes on the whalers: Animal activists on board new stealth yacht fire lasers at Japanese whalers
Sleek, black
and bristling with technology, this stealth yacht is animal conservationists'
latest weapon in their ongoing battle with Japanese whalers.
The New Zealand-registered ship called Ady Gil came within 66 feet of
colliding with the bow of Japanese harpoon ship Sonan Maru No. 2 today.
The activists tried to blind the Japanese crew with lasers and 'fired
ball-like projectiles with a projectile-launching device' during an attack
that lasted 3.5 hours, the Japanese government-sponsored Institute of
Cetacean Research said in a statement.
Each accused the other of coming dangerously close during the clashes. Neither reported any injuries or ship damage. Sea Shepherd accused the Japanese of using crowd-control sound technology known as a Long Range Acoustic Devices, or LRADs, as well as water cannon against the Ady Gil crew. The activists said they responded with lasers to get the Japanese to back off to a safe distance. The Japanese said the attack on Wednesday was more dangerous than a confrontation late Tuesday between the same whaler and Sea Shepherd's Netherlands-registered flag ship Steve Irwin.
The Japanese accuse both Sea Shepherd ships of trailing ropes in failed bids to entangle the whaler's rudder and propellor. The whalers also accused the Steve Irwin crew of hurling bottles of butyric acid - a rancid liquid that occurs in spoiled butter - during a two-hour conflict on Tuesday. Sea Shepherd makes an annual attempt to stop Japanese whalers from harpooning hundreds of whales during the southern hemisphere summer, which began this month. The first clash of the current whaling season happened Dec. 14 when the Steve Irwin and Sonan Maru No. 2 exchanged water cannon fire. Japan's whale hunts are allowed under international rules as a research program, despite a 1986 ban on commercial whaling. Whale meat not used for study is sold for consumption in Japan, which critics say is the real reason for the hunts.

Science Hides The Truth

The inconvenient release of private email conversations among climate change scientists has been a boon for climate change skeptics. What emerges from the leaked emails is a depiction of a group of scientists who practice "intellectual protectionism" -- meaning they know they're right and they'll do anything to protect their beliefs, even if it means hiding or manipulating data.
Sound familiar? Scientists in the pharmaceutical industry have been practicing this for decades. If you think the ClimateGate emails are revealing, just imagine what kind of similar emails are flying around between Big Pharma scientists who routinely manipulate study data and commit scientific fraud in the name of medicine. Time and time again, we see revelations of manipulated clinical trials where data was intentionally distorted in order to make a dangerous, useless drug appear to be safe and effective.
What ClimateGate scientists and Big Pharma scientists have in common is that they have both abandoned the core principles of good science in their quest to be right. Rather than asking questions of nature and humbly listening to the answers provided by the data, these scientists have staked out a position and decided to defend that position at all costs -- even if it requires hiding or distorting data!
That approach is entirely unscientific, of course. In my mind, it now puts much of the recent global warming science in the same category as Big Pharma's research: Pure quackery.

Man dressed in animal skin shot dead during hunt
A Greek man dressed in animal hide was mistakenly shot dead while out hunting wild boar for a Christmas dinner.
Police said
members of a shooting party made up of families opened fire when Christos
Constantinou, 49, moved through the undergrowth.
They are thought to have been confused by the fact the victim was disguised
in dark goat skins, which are used to camouflage and to mislead their
prey.
The groups had fanned out in pairs of two to track down an animal for
the traditional festive dinner when the accident happened.
Police in the northern Greek town of Nemea, Chalkidiki, said Mr Constantinou
was pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital.
Two unidentified men, aged 25 and 28, were detained and were being questioned.

Shoppers Back Circus Animal Ban

Birmingham shoppers have backed moves to outlaw the use of wild animals in circuses.While most big top attractions have already moved away from featuring animals in their acts, four circus troupes still use them. A total of 38 beasts, including camels, tigers, snakes, lions, zebras, elephants and even crocodiles, are thought to be in use. Now ministers have launched a consultation scheme to consider the introduction of tighter rules, self-regulation or banning wild animals from entertainment venues.
Max Pemberton, aged 63 and from Erdington said: “Sometimes it can be cruel on animals so I’m fully behind it.” Marie Beglun, from Stechford, is also hoping to see a ban imposed.“It is wrong that these animals are kept in the circus and I agree there should be a ban introduced,” she said.
“It’s clear that they go through times of discomfort which is not right.” Mum Kelly McKain said she had never been keen on circuses and felt that animals should not be involved in the entertainment.

people in the world, but the approximately 40 million tonnes of food wasted
by US households, retailers and food services each year would be enough
to satisfy the hunger of every one of them.
· The irrigation water used globally to grow food that is wasted
would be enough for the domestic needs (at 200 litres per person per day)
of 9 billion people - the number expected on the planet by 2050.
· If we planted trees on land currently used to grow unnecessary
surplus and wasted food, this would offset a theoretical maximum of 100%
of man-made greenhouse gas emissions.
· 10% of rich countries’ greenhouse gas emissions come from
growing food that is never eaten.
· The UK, US and Europe have nearly twice as much food as is required
by the nutritional needs of their populations. Up to half the entire food
supply is wasted between the farm and the fork. If crops wastefully fed
to livestock are included, European countries have more than three times
more food than they need, while the US has around four times more food
than is needed, and up to three-quarters of the nutritional value is lost
before it reaches people’s mouths.

Dying Elephant Trainer Blows The Whistle

The article shares shocking information released by a Ringling Brothers
elephant trainer shortly before he died, and is accompanied by some typically
disturbing photos, the likes of which animal rights activists are well

Police Make Substantial Payout For Wrongful Arrests

A group of animal rights campaigners is to receive substantial payouts after taking legal action against Lancashire Police. The action, brought by five protesters, followed arrests made during demonstrations outside Vodafone shops in Preston and Blackpool in 2006. The protesters – Dr Keith Richardson, Dr Joanne Moodie, Dr Elisa Aaltola, Dean Cain and Krystyna Warzecha – were arrested for alleged public order offences because images on their placards of monkeys being experimented on were considered offensive. The protests were intended to highlight financial ties alleged between the phone giant and a biomedical research laboratory at Oxford University. The legal action concerned arrests at five protests between March 11 and July 26, 2006.
The
campaigners brought a civil action against Lancashire Constabulary for
false imprisonment and under the Human Rights Act 1998, claiming their
rights to freedom of expression and the right to public assembly had been
breached. Lancashire Police has now accepted that the protests were legitimate.
The group will receive an undisclosed sum in an out-of-court settlement.
They were arrested under section five of the Public Order Act 1986 because
of graphic images of animal experiments.
Police said at the time the pictures were "likely to be insulting,
threatening and abusive to members of the public". campaigner Dr
Keith Richardson, 38, accused police of acting as "censors".

Ex-Chester Zoo Worker Convicted Of Trying To Have Sex With Rottweiler
Thomas Robert Edwards, 20, was seen with his boxer shorts around his ankles and to grab the bitch Tara by its hind legs and thrust himself at the animal for about 20 or 30 seconds. A witness who watched in horror from an upstairs neighbouring window said he could take no more when he then saw Edwards indulge in an indecent act by himself. Edwards, who at the time worked in catering at Chester Zoo, denied a charge of attempting to sexually penetrate a living animal during an incident on August 30 this year. He said he went into the backyard simply to have a smoke and to urinate – and had simply stroked one of two dogs which he did not know were there until he went into the yard. Edwards, of Alyndale, Hope, was convicted by a jury of 10 men and two women.
The court heard how he had earlier admitted seven charges of possessing extreme bestiality porn on his computer, which involved humans engaged in sexual activity with horses and dogs. Judge John Rogers QC, sitting at Mold Crown Court, adjourned sentence until January and asked for reports from the probation service but he indicated Edwards would receive a non-custodial sentence. The court heard that Edwards was drunk. He had been out with friends in Wrexham and returned by taxi to Caergwrle where they went to a party at the home of Janine Todd.

Environment Minister Urged To Suspend Hunt Licence Immediately
The Minister for the Environment Mr. John Gormley was today urged to immediately suspend the licence he granted earlier in the autumn to the Ward Union Stag Hunt following a serious incident last Friday when a deer being hunted by the Ward Union was chased onto the main road between Ashbourne and Slane. The deer, which was hit by an on-coming Mercedes, was seriously injured and had to be put down at the scene. It had been seen exiting Seamus Dardis’s farm having begun its chase from Huntsman Pat Coyles premises. The occupants of the car weren’t injured, but callers to Liveline who were travelling behind the car today expressed their horror at what they witnessed last Friday.
“We
cannot wait for the ban on stag hunting promised in the Programme for
Government,” said spokesperson for the AOHS Bernie Wright.
“In the interests of Animal protection and also public liability
safety, we urge Minister John Gormley to immediately suspend the licence
he gave these people to hunt deer for this -their last season. It is clear
from this latest incident that they either cannot or will not enforce
the conditions attached to the licence granted.”

Roche Engages In Science Fraud

When it comes to selling chemicals that claim to treat H1N1 swine flu, the pharmaceutical industry's options are limited to two: Vaccines and anti-virals. The most popular anti-viral, by far, is Tamiflu, a drug that's actually derived from a Traditional Chinese Medicine herb called star anise. But Tamiflu is no herb. It's a potentially fatal concentration of isolated chemical components that have essentially been bio-pirated from Chinese medicine. And when you isolate and concentrate specific chemicals in these herbs, you lose the value (and safety) of full-spectrum herbal medicine.
That didn't stop Tamiflu's maker, Roche, from trying to find a multi-billion-dollar market for its drug. In order to tap into that market, however, Roche needed to drum up some evidence that Tamiflu was both safe and effective. Roche claims there are ten studies providing Tamiflu is both safe and effective. According to the company, Tamiflu has all sorts of benefits, including a 61% reduction in hospital admissions by people who catch the flu and then get put on Tamiflu.
The problem with these claims is that they aren't true. They were simply invented by Roche. A groundbreaking article recently published in the British Medical Journal accuses Roche of misleading governments and physicians over the benefits of Tamiflu. Out of the ten studies cited by Roche, it turns out, only two were ever published in science journals. And where is the original data from those two studies? Lost. The data has disappeared. Files were discarded. The researcher of one study says he never even saw the data. Roche took care of all that, he explains. So the Cochrane Collaboration, tasked with reviewing the data behind Tamiflu, decided to investigate. After repeated requests to Roche for the original study data, they remained stonewalled. The only complete data set they received was from an unpublished study of 1,447 adults which showed that Tamiflu was no better than placebo. Data from the studies that claimed Tamiflu was effective was apparently lost forever.

Lonely Zoo Gorilla Dies

Sad-eyed Hobbit, who was 26-year old when he died, was a male Western
Lowland Silverback gorilla who arrived in South Africa in 1988 from the
Jersey Zoo in the UK on a long-term loan agreement with the National Zoological
Gardens in Pretoria. He had been kept for more than ELEVEN years, in solitary
confinement. Gorillas are indigenous Africans who are powerful, intelligent,
peaceful vegetarians, and who live in close-knit family groups, and like
humans, gorillas have unique needs and personalities. However, Hobbit’s
zoo enclosure ensured that he was kept imprisoned and denied him from
enjoying even the most basic behavioural repertoire including exercise
and social interaction.
“Captivity killed Hobbit. He had type II diabetes mellitus which develops in primates in captivity because of stress, lack of exercise, inappropriate diet and obesity. Although Animal Rights Africa (ARA) is saddened by Hobbit’s death, at least now he is at peace and his tormented, sad, depressed, lonely and empty life has finally come to an end. The unjust life sentence for this innocent victim is thankfully now finally over” said spokesperson Michele Pickover. Zoos are a relic of a bygone age - a Victorian and colonial concept which, as our knowledge of the animal kingdom grows, becomes even less palatable. They are morally and socially offensive exhibits which involve cruelty to animals they distract from the need to address the reasons why animals become endangered and to do something about their environment and habitat. Animal Rights Africa is totally opposed to the incarceration of animals and believes that zoos misinform rather than educate, and further, divert funds from positive and ethical conservation. Animals remain threatened or are even driven to extinction, whilst precious resources are drained away on expensive, high-profile breeding projects with no serious hope of success.

Antidote Pesticide Study

Antidote is currently funding a unique UK study on the effects of pesticides
and pesticide mixtures on human health. The aim is to promote good science
and get rid of animal tests. The regulatory authorities require pesticide
chemicals to be tested on a rodent and a non-rodent species (Biocides
directive 98/8/EC), which invariably means rats and dogs.
Not only are these tests extremely cruel, but the results they yield are
meaningless for human health. Another major issue ignored until very recently
by the regulatory authorities is the effect of mixtures of pesticides
on human health. Animal toxicity experiments are designed to test one
chemical at a time. Animal studies would not be able to cope with chemical
mixtures. According to toxicopathologist Dr Vyvyan Howard, in order to
test the 1,000 most common chemicals in unique combinations of three,
we would need to conduct 166 million animal experiments. That simply isn't
feasible, and even it it was, the results would not be relevant to humans.

AR Protesters Bring 100 Carcasses

Activists displayed the carcasses of about 100 foxes, rabbits, minks,
lambs, chickens and pigs in central Madrid Sunday in a protest against
the treatment of animals. The demonstrators, all dressed in white, gathered
in the Puerta del Sol square, in the heart of the capital's tourist district,
each carrying one of the dead animals. The protest was called to mark
International Animal Rights Day and "call attention to the terrible
life that each of these animals seem to have," said the Animal Equality
association, which organised protest. Campaigners had retrieved the carcasses
from farms, slaughterhouses and game reserves around the country, they
said.
"On December 10, Human Rights Day is celebrated around the world.
For many years Animal Rights Day has also been celebrated, to show that
animals that do not belong to the human species also deserve respect,"
it said in a statement.

Raiders Given Community Service

Four Swedish animal rights activists from Umeå arrested following
a raid on the mink farm in Umgransele in the spring of 2009 have been
sentenced to ommunity service. The three women and one man were arrested
in a car with false plates and investigations proved that they had been
inside the mink farm. At the trial it was revealed that the operation
was well planned, but none of the defendants would answer the prosecutor's
questions. In addition to community service for 75 days, they were also
sentenced to pay damages of more than SEK 20 000 (£1,700) to the
owner of the mink farm.

December 10, 1907: A riot breaks out in Trafalgar Square in London. Medical science seeking answers to questions of anatomy and bodily function used the technique of vivisection. This involves surgery on living organisms, usually animals with a central nervous system. Today the practice has been replaced by less invasive animal experimentation resulting in non-mortality for the subject. Only cancer research still uses vivisection as a method of research.
Frances Power Cobbe founded the National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS) in 1875. Animals were being studied either with or without the use of anesthesia. Information was gathered in front of lecture classes via vivisection. This outraged many Edwardian English folk. Some of the more famous lecturers who used vivisection as a teaching method were attacked verbally and physically. The NAVS, with the support of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, were able to pass the Cruelty to Animals Act of 1876.
In December of 1902, a stray brown dog weighing about 14 pounds was operated on and his pancreatic duct was tied off. He then lived in a small cage until February 2, 1903 when he was again brought before medical students and Physiologist Ernest Starling opened the dog's abdomen. Next, Physiologist William Bayliss examined the salivary glands after making a second incision in the dog's neck. Finally, student and future Nobel Laureate Henry Dale removed the dog's pancreas and then killed the dog. The doctors said the dog was anesthetized by the use of morphine, chloroform, and ether without the crowd knowing it. The dog became a cause célèbre.

Angling MP would rather drown worms than see beavers
November 2009. Labour's Parliamentary Angling spokesman, Martin Salter, used last week's Commons debate on fisheries to describe as "ludicrous" plans by Natural England to re-introduce the beaver to the English countryside. He claims that they are "four stone giant rodents" and, rationally, that "Natural England envisages an army of highly literate beavers in council uniforms carefully consulting maps of flood risk sites before deciding which trees to chop down"; he even asks "why do we not take the DNA of Tyrannosaurus Rex?"
Despite plenty of evidence to the contrary, Mr Salter claims that releasing beavers in England will cause flooding, be bad for woodlands and devastate fish stocks. Wildlife Extra wonders if he is worried about the fish themselves, or spoiling the fun of the worm drowners that Mr Salter champions.

The big irony behind top globalists descending on Copenhagen in luxury private jets and stretch limos is not just the fact that their own behavior completely contradicts their self-righteous hyperbole about CO2 emissions, but that their propaganda is vehemently supported by the very same big oil interests they accuse climate skeptics of pandering to. Probably one of the most flagrant examples of climate cronyism to emerge from the climategate scandal were emails in which CRU scientists, the body that provides much of the foundational global warming data for the UN IPCC, discuss how they conducted meetings with Shell Oil in order to enlist them as a “strategic partner” while getting them to bankroll pro-man made global warming research. The emails reveal that the CRU was also trying to get money from oil giants British Petroleum and Exxon-Mobil, under its former identity as Esso. “Now who is the shill for Big Oil again?” asks Anthony Watts. “Next time somebody brings up that ridiculous argument about skeptics, show them this.”
A “Copenhagen Communiqué” put out by leaders of over 500 global corporations in advance of this week’s summit calls for drastic measures on behalf of developed countries to “de-carbonise their economies” – a move that would completely devastate living standards and lead to gargantuan levels of unemployment. The communiqué also demands that a global carbon tax be implemented via a carbon trading system. Bear in mind that the very people calling for such a system are the same people who will benefit from it to the tune of billions, as we shall explore later. The statement calls for, “Measures to deliver a robust global greenhouse gas emissions market in order to provide the most effective, efficient and equitable emission reductions. It would be comprised of a growing series of national or regional “cap-and-trade” markets linked together, in which the “caps” are brought down in line with the targets that have been adopted for emission reduction.”
The document also states that CO2 emissions need to be reduced by a staggering 50-85% by 2050, a process that would return humanity to a near stone age level of development. And who are the radicals calling for such severe measures in the name of fighting the evil life giving gas that humans exhale and plants breathe? Greenpeace? Al Gore? Namely – James Smith, chairman of UK Shell Oil, Tony Hayward, Group Chief Executive, British Petroleum, along with hundreds of other global corporate giants, many of whom are directly tied in with big oil, and central banks who, far from bankrolling climate change skeptics, are directly invested in the scam of human-induced global warming.

AN animal rights activist jailed for his part in a terror campaign against
companies connected to Huntington Life Sciences (HLS) has had his lifetime
ban on protesting overturned.
The case was described by QC, James Wood, as a matter of the "constitutional" right to "protest and participate in free debate".
Gavin Medd-Hall, 46, of Selwood Road, Croydon, compiled information on targets whose details were posted on the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) website - including a Cambridge businessman. They were later targeted by "fanatics" who caused over £12 million damage to victims' homes and businesses during the six-year reign of terror.
Medd-Hall was jailed for eight years at Winchester Crown Court on July 30 last year for conspiracy to blackmail. He was also handed an indefinite Asbo, as were three others, banning them from taking part in any animal rights protest, or contributing to a website dedicated to such a protest for the rest of their lives. On Friday, all four challenged the Asbos before Lord Justice Elias, Mr Justice Griffith Williams and Judge Elgan Edwards, sitting at London's Criminal Appeal Court, claiming they flew in the face of both their Human Rights and rights of peaceful protest under domestic law.

A man who raided a South Jordan mink farm says a prosecutor's statements
during an aborted sentencing hearing amount to a breach of his plea agreement.
As a remedy, William James Viehl asked U.S. District Judge Dee Benson
on Thursday to remove himself from his case and reassign it to another
judge for the purpose of sentencing. Viehl, 23, was expected to be sentenced
Nov. 12 to six months in prison for damaging and interfering with animal
enterprises during a September raid on the McMullin mink farm in South
Jordan. Such a sentence is consistent with the low end of the federal
sentencing guidelines, which the U.S. Attorney's Office had agreed to
recommend in exchange for Viehl's guilty plea. During the sentencing hearing,
however, prosecutor John Huber told Benson that although Viehl's actions
were classified as a property crime by the sentencing guidelines, the
impact of his misconduct was much more sinister than simple vandalism.
"The crime itself was designed to intimidate and inspire fear in
the victims," Huber said. Investigators believe Viehl and Alex Hall,
21, released as many as 650 minks in the raid and also vandalized a number
of buildings on the property with phrases such as "No More Mink,
No More Murder" and "ALF: We Are Watching."

Cat Jailed for Aiding Prisoners

An Israeli prison, The Nakab, located between Egypt and Israel has booked one cat in solitary confinement as punishment for its services and assistance to prisoners who are serving sentences in solitary confinement. According to the Israeli officers, the cat was aiding prisoners by moving light objects (i.e. letters, bread etc) between the cells of prisoners.
It turns out that the cat had been providing
its services to prisoners for several months until it was exposed recently
and so the prison administration decided to place the cat in solitary
confinement – the same way they do to the prisoners. There are dozens
of cats living between the cells and rooms of the Palestinian prisoners
in several Israeli prisons and private prisons, and apparently the cats
are trying to help them.

It seems people often need to experience a bullet to the head before they will believe bullets can be deadly…and then they rue the day they ignored warnings about playing with loaded guns. Vaccination seems to hold a similar place. People ignore words of caution and roll up their sleeves to get a flu shot. It seems they think getting a vaccine is the same as taking a multivitamin, and equally as benign. But when serious adverse events occur, such as Guillain-Barre paralysis, a seizure disorder or even a death, a jolt of reality lays bare just how damaging a “simple vaccine” can be. The stranglehold of fear, perpetrated by those in white coats and by the medical bureaucrats in Washington DC who take their marching orders from pharma, is working hard to choke rationally thinking adults into submission. I get emails almost every day that say something like, “I bought your DVDs and your books…but I have a question: Should I get a flu shot?” WHAT?!! My mouth drops. I have to clear my head and find a way to say, “No, you should not get the flu shot”, being cautious to keep my tone void of sarcasm. That may seem harsh, but in very turbulent times. Soft language and hand holding until people “get it” is becoming increasingly more difficult.

More and more Americans are researching on their own and more and more doctors are presenting the dangers of H1N1 vaccine. Why? Because our health officials are NOT being truthful or providing the facts to the public. Health officials cannot, in all honesty and integrity, announce that the vaccine is "safe and effective," when research and the manufacturer's inserts state otherwise. If our health officials are as professional and prudent as we would like to think, wouldn't it be advantageous to make sure everyone is fully informed of ALL THE RISKS...You are the one taking all those risks!
The flu shot is no guarantee against getting the flu.

Possible jail term for animal rights activist
An animal rights activist is facing a possible jail sentence after he was convicted of taking part in a raid on a Lincolnshire rabbit farm.
Lewis Pogson had denied he was among a group of protesters who forced their way into a shed at a farm in Normanby-by-Spital, near Market Rasen.But he was convicted at Lincoln Crown Court. Pogson denied taking part in the attack, claiming he was at his mother's home in Dulwich, south-east London, on the night of the incident. But after two days of deliberations a jury found the 23-year-old, of Little Bornes, Dulwich, guilty of four charges relating to the break-in.
Felicity Gerry, prosecuting, said the raid was intended to persuade farmer Jeffrey Douglas to stop trading with research firm Huntingdon Life Sciences. Pogson had links to a protest group that targets Huntingdon and its suppliers, and equipment used in the raid was found in his mother's garage. A shopping bag iscovered at the house also contained straw and hay, suggesting it might have been used to remove some of the rabbits.
Pogson was bailed until the New Year.

The heart-rending sound that a lobster makes as it is boiled alive puts off many a home chef from preparing the dish for a dinner party. But now anyone can serve up a buttered lobster freshly cooked in their own kitchen, safe in the knowledge that it has been humanely killed, thanks to a British entrepreneur. Simon Buckhaven has created a machine that takes less than a second to efficiently and painlessly zap a lobster, crab or other crustacea to death. The price – at £2,500 – may deter some but many an animal lover or restaurant chef will think it a small price to pay for a cruelty-free death. Plus, according to the manufacturer, the CrustaStun also makes the meat taste better.
Inside one of the little machines that are going on sale this week, a lobster takes just 0.3 seconds to die, whereas it can live for three minutes in boiling water. A crab takes even longer to die as it is boiled to death – up to four and a half minutes. After several trials here and in the US, Mr Buckhaven's firm, Studham Technologies, in Bedfordshire, has developed a machine that takes five seconds to use, and meets health and safety and other regulations on both sides of the Atlantic. The entrepreneur is firmly in the "yes" camp in the old argument about whether lobsters feel pain. One side is that their nervous systems are not complex enough to experience what humans would recognise as pain, implying that, for a lobster, being placed in boiling water would be like being sent gently to sleep in a warm whirlpool bath.

The recent exposures of fraud coming from the Hadley Climate Research Unit, then followed by similar exposures at New Zealand's NWIA, Australia's climate center, and NOAA have only confirmed the doubts arising from the obviously NON-scientific methods employed by the Anthropogenic Global Warming supporters, hereinafter called the "Global Warming Cult". I call them a cult because of the abandonment of scientific method by many of the acolytes, together with a recent British Court decision that declared belief in Global Warming was accorded the status of a religion.
Human Caused Global Warming is not being researched; it be being promoted. Al Gore and his fellow investors have spent over a hundred million dollars in creating a crisis of human-caused global warming out of (quite literally) thin air. They are not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. They expect to reap billions in profits from the trading of Carbon Credits, a "license to pollute" available for a price and subject to brokerage fees. One of the people Al Gore relied on to create this scheme was Ken Lay, late of ENRON, aka the Crooked "E".
Coincident with the desire to reap huge profits from the general population of the world is the agenda to promote a global government. Currently, the push for a global government rests on three pillars, Global Warming is one of them, leading to a surrendering of national sovereignty scheduled to occur at the Copenhagen Conference December 7th, 2009. The other two pillars exploited to create the "need" for a global government are a global swine-flu pandemic, requiring a global health organization, and a global financial crisis, requiring a global bank. The political power behind this push for global government is immense; enough to win Al Gore an Academy Award and a Nobel Peace Prize for his film, "An Inconvenient Truth", despite a court ruling pointing out the numerous provable lies and distortions in it.
To any real objective observer, the methods employed by the Cult are not those of science and research but of salesmanship and propaganda. Scare tactics are well in evidence. Bioculture Ltd., with facilities at 19 sites around the world, has secured permits to begin operating next summer in Guayama, a small, depressed mountain district in southeastern Puerto Rico. They want to turn the Caribbean territory into a major supplier of primates, much to the dismay of islanders already dealing with a plague of patas monkeys — descendants of lab escapees that run though backyards, stop traffic and destroy crops.
The company, based in the African island nation of Mauritius, says the operation will employ at least 50 people and buy fruit from local farmers, an important consideration on an island where unemployment is nearly 16 percent. "This will help many people in the community," said Olga Colon, a local school principal who has collected 300 signatures in support of the facility. She said Bioculture has pledged to buy supplies for her school. But the project is opposed by everyone from Guayama Mayor Glorimari Jaime to Puerto Rican actor Benicio del Toro, who says it's unethical to breed monkeys for research, and renowned primatologist Jane Goodall.

China Jails Environmentalist Wanted in U.S.

China — Justin Franchi Solondz, an environmental activist from New
Jersey who spent years evading charges of ecoterrorism in the United States
by hiding out in China, was sentenced to three years in prison by a local
court on Friday on charges of manufacturing drugs in this backpacker haven.
After serving his time, Mr. Solondz, 30, who is on the F.B.I.’s
most wanted list, will be deported to the United States, where he faces
charges stemming from what the authorities say was his role in an arson
rampage that destroyed buildings in three western states as a member of
a group related to the environmental extremist organization Earth Liberation
Front. He was indicted in absentia in 2006. The story of Mr. Solondz’s
life on the lam spanned three continents, involved at least two aliases
and ended in a smoky bar in one of the world’s most authoritarian
countries. Mr. Solondz’s journey started in the fall of 2005, when
he joined his mother in Italy for a wedding and then traveled around Europe
and Asia. His parents say he stopped communicating with them in March
2006, just before the F.B.I. announced charges against him. The trail
went cold until March 2009, when the Chinese police arrested Mr. Solondz
here in the mountains of Yunnan Province after he was caught with drugs
and fake Canadian identification, according to his parents. During a daylong
trial last month, Mr. Solondz pleaded guilty to drug charges and asked
to be deported to the United States.

Prempro or Premarin hormone replacement therapies. In one case, a jury
awarded $28 million and a judge unsealed another case from last month
with a $75 million judgment. Both cases played out in a Pennsylvania state
court in Philadelphia. Some 1,500 lawsuits have been filed in Philadelphia
and another 10,000 are lodged in other courts around the country. Lawyers
for many plaintiffs say they have won financial settlements for undisclosed
amounts in at least 10 other cases before the suits went to trial, according
to The New York Times. Esther Berezofsky, a lawyer for one of the women
who won the awards in Philadelphia tells the paper that “this is
just the tip of the iceberg.” In cases that had reached jury judgments,
women with breast cancer had won damages in 10 of the 12 hormone drug
cases, although many are on appeal, she tells the paper, adding that a
federal appeals court decision in St. Louis this month had significantly
improved the chances of receiving punitive damages and winning appeals.
In
that decision, a three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the
Eighth Circuit overturned an award of $27 million for an Arkansas woman,
citing improper testimony by an expert witness, but ordered a new trial
on punitive damages. The judges’ ruling said “there was sufficient
evidence upon which a jury could conclude that Wyeth acted with reckless
disregard to the risk of injury.” One Wall Street tells the paper
the latest judgments would have little effect on Pfizer unless the punitive
damages were upheld on appeal. “At this point, it doesn’t
concern me too much,” says Tim Anderson of Sanford C. Bernstein.
For its part, Pfizer denies improper conduct and plans further appeals.

The
BUAV, the UK’s leading organisation campaigning to end animal experiments,
has today criticised Newcastle University for allowing extremely cruel
experiments to be carried out on mice. This follows the University’s
announcement of research into the pain-killing benefits of Brazilian mint
(Hyptis crenata), claiming that a ‘tea’ made from the plant
was as effective at providing pain relief as the common pain-killing drug
Indometacin 1.
Yet, in spite of robust evidence from patients in Brazil where it has
long been prescribed for pain relief, and the existence of many investigative
methods involving humans that could have been used to research its effects
further, the researchers inflicted extremely cruel and scientifically
questionable procedures on mice to ‘confirm’ the analgesic
effects of the mint. The tests used included the ‘Plantar test (Hargreaves
method)’ in which the hind paws of mice are exposed to heat to induce
pain, and also the ‘Acetic acid writhing test’ in which acid
is injected into the abdomens of mice to induce pain so severe that the
animals ‘contort’ 2, 3. The frequency of these contortions
is used as a measurement of the degree of pain being experienced.
The cruelty of these experiments is self-evident, but furthermore the
scientific validity and human relevance of such research is highly dubious.
An expert workshop on pain research in 2008 concluded that, ‘Using
animals to research pain has "limited value" and should be replaced
by newer technologies,’ based on a detailed report that asserted,
‘Animal tests…are too simplistic’ 4. It cited the more
humane and human-specific research methods available, including neuroimaging
and electrophysiological investigations, many of which have been specifically
to explore the effects of proposed new analgesics
These techniques are widely used and known to be powerful and effective
5, 6, and are pivotal to cutting edge research taking place in pain research
at Aston University in the UK, for example 7-9.

Animal Rights Activist Denies Farm Damage

A man accused of being involved in a raid in which animal rights activists seized rabbits and caused thousands of pounds worth of damage has appeared in court.
Lewis Pogson, an animal rights campaigner, faces a string of charges in connection with the raid of a Lincolnshire farm linked to the well-known research company Huntingdon Life Sciences. A court was told that equipment used in the raid was later found at his mother's house.
A jury heard how intruders forced their way into a shed at a farm in Normanby by Spital, north of Lincoln, and stole 129 New Zealand White rabbits which were bred specifically for the animal research industry.
Felicity Gerry, prosecuting, told Lincoln Crown Court that Lewis Pogson was one of those involved in the raid.
A pair of bolt croppers used in the raid were later found in the garage of his mother's home in Dulwich, south-east London, along with what Miss Gerry described as a burglary kit.
Pogson, 23, of Bush Road, East Peckham, Kent, denies charges of blackmail, criminal damage, theft of rabbits and interfering with a contractual relationship on January 7, 2008.

BBC Climate Correspondent Was Forwarded CRU Emails Five Weeks Before They Were Made Public
A BBC Weather presenter who was discussed by scientists in the “climategate” emails says he was forwarded the material more than five weeks before it was made public on the internet.
Paul Hudson, a weather presenter and climate correspondent for the BBC, notes on his blog “I was forwarded the chain of e-mails on the 12th October,”.
Hudson says he saw the exact emails that were either hacked or leaked from the Climate Research Unit at East Anglia University placed on the internet last week.
“The e-mails released on the internet as a result of CRU being hacked into are identical to the ones I was forwarded and read at the time and so, as far as l can see, they are authentic.” Hudson notes.
Following the publication of a 9th October article Hudson wrote for the BBC entitled “whatever happened to global warming?“, in which he questioned the science behind the theory of human induced warming, the BBC correspondent was discussed within emails to which several of the CRU climatologists were privy, including Kevin Trenberth, Michael Mann, Tom Wigley and Philip D. Jones.
Hudson’s article, which pointed out that there had been no increase in global temperatures since 1998, spurred Kevin Trenberth, one of the leading authors of the IPCC report on climate change to make the following comment within the private emails to his colleagues:
“The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t.”

National Domestic Extremism Team issues bail conditions designed to prevent
protest
Following two house raids in Evesham and Gosport in the early hours of Tuesday 10th November, four animal rights activists were arrested, charged with conspiracy to commit criminal damage and given wide-ranging bail conditions designed specifically to prevent their participation in any facet of animal rights campaigning. The charges are based upon the seizure of a solitary piece of 'evidence' in a raid a year earlier.
The raids commenced at 7am when police wearing balaclavas, including members of the National Domestic Extremism Team (NDET), raided two houses. At one address masked police scaled the walls and broke windows, instead of knocking on the door, to gain entry. At the other, 20-30 police burst in brandishing fire extinguishers. From these two raids four people were arrested and later charged with conspiracy to cause criminal damage. The arresting officer was DC Mace, of the NDET London, and the accusations relate to several minor acts of criminal damage in the south of England, claimed by anonymous animal rights activists.
The bail conditions imposed upon those charged are remarkable in their severity; the activists must “not to participate in, assist travel arrangements, facilitate or organise in any way any animal rights related activity, stall, website, protest or demonstration”. All of the activities prohibited by the bail conditions are completely legal. The bail conditions, deliberately framed to prevent lawful animal rights activity, are also reminiscent of the Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) (see here) imposed on several of those convicted of conspiracy to blackmail in January 2009 (see here). The defendants in that case were prevented from protesting against vivisection for the rest of their lives by the ASBOs imposed.

EDM569 - Now Finished

Early
Day Motions have now closed for this session of parliament. EDM569 finished
with the support of 243 MPs, ranking it joint 10th out of 2,421 EDMs in
this parliamentary session. In other words, it was better supported that
99.5% of other EDMs. EDM569 calls for an evaluation of animal and non
animal methods to establish whether some animal tests can be discontinued.
Interestingly, one of the few EDMs attracting more support was the sixth-placed
EDM545 which called for more resources and political will to be directed
towards reversing the increases in numbers of animals used in experiments.
Many people were pleasantly suprised at how eagerly their MP agreed to
support EDM569. On the last day the EDM was even supported by Evan Harris.
Harris has been an outspoken supporter of animal testing and an opponent
of similar proposed inquiries.
The undoubted success of EDM569 is another example of the support there
is for a reasonable policy on animal testing based on discussion and evaluation
as opposed to relying on those involved in the practice to make responsible
decisions without being monitored. Safer Medicines, who instigated the
EDM, will continue to call for an inquiry, which as well as being a very
reasonable and acceptable request offers massive potential for advances
in this area.

A Minnesota activist who refused to testify earlier this week before a federal grand jury in Davenport is now charged with conspiracy for an act of “animal enterprise terrorism” — believed to be a 2004 animal-rights vandalism act at the University of Iowa.
Scott DeMuth, 22, made his initial appearance this morning on a charge of conspiracy. DeMuth was already in custody for contempt of court because of his refusal to testify. Fellow activist Carrie Feldman, who at one time dated DeMuth, also refused to testify and is in custody.
“Scott Ryan DeMuth did knowingly and intentionally conspire with persons unknown to the grand jury to commit animal enterprise terrorism and cause economic damage to the animal enterprise in an amount exceeding $10,000,” the indictment unsealed today says.
The indictment does not specifically say the charge is in connection to the University of Iowa action. However, the time frame and indication that it was in Johnson County match. Furthermore, federal authorities considered the extensive vandalism an act of terrorism. And DeMuth and Feldman both have said the Nov. 14 vandalism is what federal authorities wanted them to testify about.

The European BioWar Outbreak

biggest story on the Planet today is the outbreak of a very serious Advanced
Biological War virus in Europe. The second biggest story on the Planet
is the suppression of this story for almost two weeks by the corporate
owned mainstream news media. There is a lot we know and a lot that we
can only speculate on about what is unfolding in Central Europe. We know
that in mid-October, less than a month ago, there was a growing number
of cases of what many thought was Swine Flu (A/H1N1) in the western part
of the Ukraine. We know that many hundreds if not thousands of people
in western Ukraine witnessed low flying light airplanes aerosol spraying
something over Ukrainian cities during the days of October 29, 2009 and
October 31, 2009. We know that beginning the night of October 29th, massive
numbers of people begin to get very sick. We know that the Ukraine government
issued a statement denying that it was doing any aerial spraying to combat
the growing disease or authorizing any spraying over Ukrainian cities.
We know that by October 30th, the Ukrainian authorities closed all schools
for three weeks and banded public gatherings.
We do NOT know what disease the people were/are coming down with. We do
know that doctors are describing the disease as Pneumonic Plague, or as
some type of hemorrhagic fever, or as hemorrhagic influenza, or as hemorrhagic
pneumonia. We know that the illness, whatever it is, does not appear to
be A/H1N1. We do not know if the disease is a recombination of A/H1N1
with other viruses or some totally different virus or if it is in fact
a virus. We know that the World Health Organization (WHO) has had several
days to sequence the genes of the disease but has failed to release this
data.
We know that WHO has NOT called for the quarantining of the Ukraine or
the shutdown of all global travel to/from the area of infection and that
this is the same thing that they did when Mexican Swine Flu (A/H1N1) first
broke out and that the failure to contain that virus early on ensured
its spread throughout the world.
We know that the internal temperature of the lungs of those with a terminal
case of what many are calling 'Ukrainian Plague' is often from 130F to
135F. We do know that autopsies show that the lungs are filled with blood,
and are black in color, and that the lung tissue has turned to mush. We
know that patients who first show any signs of illness usually crash in
less than 48 hours, sometimes the same day.
We know that the disease was spreading by about 200,000 per day but that
this has slowed to about 100,000 day now, in the Ukraine, as people take
extraordinary steps to contain the spread of the disease. We know that
well over one and a third million people in the Ukraine are very ill with
the disease (according to published official sources) and that over 60,000
are hospitalized in serious to critical condition. We know that the disease
has a very high transmission rate with a likely low amount of viral (if
it is in fact a virus) material needed to cause an infection. We know
that the official reports of deaths are under 300 in the Ukraine. We also
know that it is normal for hospital admissions of people with ARI (acute
respiratory infection) to have a fatality rate of from 5% to 10%. We know
that non-official sources were reporting over 3,000 deaths several days
ago and that this number is more in tune with the 5-10% fatality rate
than the official figures.
We do not know what effective treatments are for this illness. We do know
that young adults seem to be more in danger of this illness. We suspect
that 'cytokine storming' similar to that in the 1918 Spanish Flu, that
killed approximately 50 million people, is taking place.
We know from official Ukrainian Health Ministry reports that the illness
does not test out as Mexican Swine Flu (A/H1N1). We do not know if the
existing Swine Flu vaccine has any effect, but based on the non-positive
response to Swine Flu in testing, we suspect that the vaccine is ineffective
as the viral protean shell is different than A/H1N1 (if in fact it is
a virus that causes the illness).
We know that the illness has spread to Poland, where over one quarter
of a million people are now very ill. We know that it has spread to Belarus
and to Hungary and elsewhere in central Europe. We know that 900,000 people
are said to have Swine Flu in Norway but we do not know if this is related
to Ukraine Plague in any way.

Trial In Austria

provincial court has decided that the animal rights trial will be held
at the original court, contrary to the application filed by some of the
accused.
This court's spokesperson has now announced that the trial will start
at the end of February and will probably last til October.
That is all bad news for everybody involved, as this court is utterly
biased and far away from where people live. The appointed judge is from
the police, she came 6th in last year’s police shooting competition
with pistols. She also is known as right wing and racist. the secretary
of her spokesperson is directly related to one of the biggest opponents
of animal rights in Austria, an avid hunter, who has filed a number of
law suits against VGT already and who was being sabbed a number of times
and whose breeding factories for pheasants and ducks were targets of liberation
actions as well as being closed down through persistent investigations,
publicity and cases filed at court by VGT.
One of the 10 activists charged had police visiting him again recently.
He was questioned by police as he is being suspected of degrading the
provincial flag of Tyrol (!), a crime under section 248 of the Austrian
criminal law code. He had published a video on youtube, where he was seen
burning this flag.
Ever new twists in this twisted story: besides a green party politician
being considered a member of the criminal organisation for warning activists
of police surveillance, and a judge, who ruled in favour of hunt sabs
and who because of that had her phone tapped for two months and her position
surveilled for 6 months more, we now have the criminal organisation committing
the most atrocious crime of all: burning a provincial flag!

Sabs Out In Hampshire

Hunt saboteurs taking action in Hampshire against the New Forest Hounds
AS A Land Rover screeches to a halt in front of us, the back doors are flung open. Quickly scrabbling aboard, we’re confronted with a scene that could have come straight from a war film. Dressed from head to toe in camouflage gear, four men sit facing each other, clutching maps and compasses. Nodding a stoical hello towards myself and a Daily Echo photographer, we hold on tight as we depart across the New Forest. We have no idea what to expect. We’ve been given very little information about what the morning will involve.
The mood is charged, hushed even – well, as much as it can be above the drone of the engine – as the men focus on the task ahead. But they’re not soldiers, they’re hunt saboteurs and their mission is simple. It’s a Saturday morning in early November, the main hunt season is just getting into full swing, and the “sabs” are determined to monitor proceedings. While fox-hunting may have been banned back in 2005, they claim it is still being practised intentionally in the New Forest. So the sabs have gone covert – skulking in bushes and hiding behind trees – in a bid to gather enough video evidence to prove it. Braving all weathers, their staunch beliefs in animal rights spur them from their Southampton homes every weekend to shadow their local hunt.

(Italy) morini farm close down at last!

To remind you we (grass roots activists) had a fierce campaign against Morini farm, a vivisection supplier based in Italy that had in the past supplied all labs in the country and also labs in different countries of Europe. They had up to 1,100 beagles and thousands of rabbits, rats, mice, gerbils and also mini-pigs.
The campaign started in the end of 2002 and was halted in 2006-2007, when practically all demos at the farm or in the town and also at suppliers in the whole county were banned by police. It was halted also because we had proof that the farm business was practically disrupted and they were not selling any dogs to labs anymore (just to pet shops) and that they had already decided to sell the land to a building company that had presented to the city council a project to build houses on that land. We knew the farm was going to close down soon, but still they kept doing (very poor) business up to now. In the meantime we continued monitoring their sales and had proof the dogs were not going to labs and the numbers were reduced to 330.
Now, after all these years, we can taste the victory of the campaign because the farm is finally going to close and in the worse way, confirming that these years they kept open not in order to make money but only not to give any satisfaction to us and all animal rights activists: in fact during these years they had built debts, didn't pay taxes and now the banks have taken all their goods for 120.000 euros!!!

Report From US Mink Trial Sentencing

On November 12th, 2009, both activists and fur farmers converged on the federal courthouse on downtown Salt Lake City to attend the sentencing for William “BJ” Viehl’s. Having pleaded guilty, BJ was to be sentenced for the release of 600 mink from the nearby McMullin Fur Farm. This was the first sentencing under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, and the first for a non-turncoat accused A.L.F. activist (for an A.L.F. action) in over two years. I had the good fortune of visiting BJ in jail the previous day in what we hoped we be his last jail visit ever. He explained to me the expectation of both himself and his attorney at the sentencing was a sentence of no more than six months.
In the plea agreement, the prosecution agreed to recommend the low end of the guidelines. The AETA has been the subject of much hype, among the criticisms being the harsh sentences imposed for property crimes. A close look at the guidelines however finds that, within a narrow margin of “damage” (the dollar amount being the prime determinate of sentencing guideline placement), the AETA still remains potentially a lesser threat than charges for the same crimes at the state level. In BJ’s case, the guidelines called for six to ten months. With the prosecution recommending six months, and the judge’s history of adhering to the guidelines, BJ expected to be released from jail in no more than one month. While the guidelines were discretionary, BJ was hopeful for getting released that day. Present at the hearing were approximately a dozen friends and supporters of BJ, as well as his wife and mother. The opposite side of the aisle was occupied by what we all speculated – by their weight and dress – were fur farmers. We would later learn Chris Valco (general manager of the Fur Breeder’s Agricultural Co-op) and Ryan Holt (3,000 mink released from his South Jordan farm in 1996) were among them.

20 Years of hypertension research
using genetically modified animals: no clinically promising approaches
in sight

The incidence of essential or primary hypertension is increasing, especially in the northern hemisphere, but although the disease displays clear symptoms, its aetiology appears very complex, and thus no causal treatment is available yet. In the 1990's, genetically modified animals (GMO) were considered to be the key to solving this problem of high complexity. However, until now, although a few approaches have shown that old, well-known drugs have a positive effect (decrease of blood pressure) on such animal models of hypertension, no approach has appeared in the literature of this area of research which might indicate a direct connection between GMO and a therapeutic strategy to treat or prevent this type of hypertension in humans. Instead, criticism of the GMO approach has accumulated in the last years, arguing that it is misleading as this disease does not have a monogenic cause and so complementary regulatory mechanisms could prevent the true identification of the function of the modified genes. Furthermore, the technology is best developed in mice, whose physiology of blood pressure is different from that of humans.
Because
of species specificity, it is not easy to extrapolate the results from
animal models of hypertension to human hypertension. Also, in the years
2000 to 2004 a reorientation of the technology and the aims of this kind
of research took place. Therefore, although these approaches are without
exception deemed "very promising" in the literature, it cannot
be expected that research on GMO will make any contribution to a new therapeutic
strategy in the near future.

It seems that every time HLS submits a new document to the SEC, they offer
words of encouragement to activists. Today, HLS announced third quarter
results. As of September 30, revenues were down 25% from one year ago.
Also in the documents filed today, HLS clarified the risks faced by the
company.
Here's the original text from HLS' 2008 Annual Report (Form 10-K):
"The Company depends on third parties to provide it with services
critical to its business. The failure of any of these third parties to
adequately provide the needed services could have a material adverse effect
on the Company’s business."
Here's today's amended version: "The Company depends on third parties
to provide it with products and services for its business. In the event
of a failure of any of these third parties to adequately provide the products
or services, the Company could have difficulty in obtaining alternative
sources of the products and services due to the activities of animal rights
extremists and this could have a material adverse effect on the Company’s
business."
